The Hippo Pod: Marilyn

In this podcast, Employer Brand and Employee Engagement Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. This episode, we spoke with Marilyn, who has been at Golden Hippo for almost 2 years as a Receptionist and was recently promoted to HR & TA Coordinator.

Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Marilyn’s conversation:

What’s your Golden Hippo story? How did you start your career here?

I heard about Golden Hippo through LinkedIn. I had a year of not working during the pandemic, and I started looking for new opportunities after that. I was seeking jobs in the LA area and came across the receptionist position. I had receptionist background so I applied and checked out their website. I loved everything I saw and all of the amenities. I thought it would be a really cool place to work.

What does a typical day look like for you? From start to finish.

My commute tends to be about an hour and thirty minutes, so I avoid traffic in the morning by using the gym in the office before work. The great thing about Golden Hippo and our gym is that we have showers, so it’s very convenient for me to work out and then get ready to start my day. After that, I’ll take advantage of our lovely kitchen and make myself a smoothie. I’ll then go back to my desk and check my Slack and email. At about twelve, I take my lunch in the kitchen and cook myself something. I end my day by responding to emails, making shipments, or helping my coworkers with any jobs they may have. Every day looks different for me, I feel like I touch a little bit of everything. Every Tuesday we have lunch catered after our company-wide meetings, so I’ll help the girls get it set up. I also help host happy hours with one of my coworkers Reyna.

How would you describe our company culture to a candidate?

Collaborative. It’s very easy to talk to anybody in any department. It’s very fun, healthy, and engaging. Everyone is super friendly and hands-on. That’s one of the reasons why I followed up with my application when I applied.

What makes you excited about going to work?

Coming in and knowing that every day is different, and seeing the people here. I’ve made connections with my coworkers so it’s always nice to see them. My new role will be hybrid, so that will be a different transition. I’m still committing to coming in twice a week so I can still collaborate with everybody and have those interactions.

If you could give job seekers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Look at the website- if you happen to get an interview or are just looking for the job initially, you can really get a sense of what it’s about. Make sure it connects with you because if it does, it will be an easy transition for you and will feel like a great place to work. If you do get hired and choose to accept the position, make sure to make connections and get to know the people outside of your department.
